Congratulations to Hot Lixx Hulahan!!!!

The world may have been transfixed by the Olympics in Beijing this month, but in Oulu, Finland, a much more important international competition recently took place: The 2008 Air Guitar World Championships.

And who brought back the title to the good ol' US of A? Why, our very favorite Friend of a Friend, Craig "Hot Lixx Hulahan" Billmeier!

I don't know this guy, but I'm so proud! I'm sure our Dan must be ecstatic.

Let's all take a moment and celebrate Hot Lixx's triumph in pleather...the culmination of years of training, sacrifice, pain, and suffering (those windmills come with a price, my friend).

Hot Lixx Hulahan...a true American hero with a rocking haircut.

OMG! Go, Hot Lixx, GO! The stage must have been littered with air panties after that performance.

I LOVE the fringed gloves/sleeves(?). Nice touch. Michael Phelps would never be able to pull this off. You deserve the gold, my man!

You know how you can tell he's a winner? The Depeche Mode t-shirt that he's rocking in the TIME interview.

NICE.

So the next competition is Hot Lixx Hulahan vs. Michael Phelps, in a poetry slam for King Of The World.

Dan, can you help us score an interview with Hot Lixx?

I would imagine, although that's probably a bad idea, seeing as he will be more interesting than all of us combined.

Damn him!

The funny thing about his air guitaring is that that is EXACTLY how he plays normal guitar in his real bands.

Well, of course he will be more interesting than we are. That's the point of interviewing him.

Hey,... something just popped into my head. Whatever happened to that youtube video contest thing with NIN?

Well not a man-crush but definitely a dude with an aesthetic that even as a kid I definitely felt a kinship to.

I don't take myself nearly as serious, though.

Absolutely nothing has happened with the YouTube contest. It seems to be dead in the water which is unfortunate. There's a load of crap videos entered but I think there's also a few quality ones too. But I've made a new "contact", of sorts, and maybe I can get a little information out of him.

Currently absorbing: The implications of the fact that I have just offered a date to Eric Gaffney to play at my venue.

JR, maybe you should just be happy that poor Gaffney is unappreciated in his own time - because if he was appreciated in his own time you may have to endure the depression that is the new chat forum in nin.com, gaffney.com where people said 'gaff is awesome' or somesuch and they were people you really didn't want to love Gaffney. Actually my brother in law went to see Dinosaur Jr recently in London - is that Gaffney?

There's a new post in the works but for now I'm being whisked away to Arkansas for the weekend. Catch up with you guys on Sunday with some (hopefully still) exciting news.

:)

Wishing you luck, JR!

Close, Isabel. Dino is the band that Eric Gaffney's bandmate, Lou Barlow, was kicked out of twenty years ago. He went on to form Sebadoh with Eric Gaffney (and Jason Loewenstein), and has recently reunited with Dino and they're touring like crazy. And rocking like crazy. I'll be seeing them in two weeks, and J better watch out.

I get you, though, about having the wrong people appreciate your hero. Don't get me wrong, EG is definitely appreciated and regarded as sort of a lo-fi pioneer/god by many, but thankfully most of them are fans that I approve of.

The idea of being able to share a performance of Fields of Gaffney with new people, and to bring some new people to my venue, however, gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. It's kinda like religion for me.

Oh, and FAR too many people think that Sebadoh = Lou Barlow.

Actually, when I first started listening to them I thought that all of the songs were Lou's, due to the fact that the person who introduced me to them was a MAJOR Lou Barlow fan/sycophant (they are legion).

It took me a while to catch on to the fact that they were a strict democracy, and all multi-instrumentalists, meaning that there were three pretty distinct songwriting voices within the band (Eric's is the crazy one). Generally, the person singing the song is the one who wrote it.

And when I finally realized that there were three songwriters (but that they played on each other's songs), I realized that all of the songs I liked best were Gaffney's. (Then Loewenstein's, then Barlow's, in that order. Which is not to say that I don't adore Loewensteing and like Barlow very much...they're just not Gaffney.)

So there you have it.
