So Iris what are you up to tonight? (or last night if you are out now, not sure what time zone you are in) - hope it's something good

Iris said...

We're in the Chicago time zone so the evening is just beginning for us. I think I'm going to risk going to the local Mexican restaurant for dinner tonight and hope that Hubby doesn't seek his revenge from last year when I told them it was his birthday and they smashed ice cream and chocolate sauce in his face. Wish me luck!

Iris said...

holy smokes! the margaritas are deadly potent at the Mexican joint tonight! WHOO!!!

Isabel said...

Glad you enjoyed the margarita-frenzy, so a bit hungover this morning??
Actually apparently Trent played the cover of 'metal' last night in Florida so maybe I'll get my dream in London of him doing it with Gary Numan

Isabel said...

erm I don't mean doing 'it' I mean duetting on the song!

Iris said...

Well it wasn't exactly a frenzy. I only had one but I forgot how strong they make them there. I don't think the fact that I'd only eaten an ice cream sandwich and a granola bar for the day helped much either. I was toasted before I even reached the halfway point. lol. No time for a hangover though. Was up at 6:30 this morning for Race for the Cure. Now it's time to head for Iowa City for some other post-birthday fun. :)

True story - I spent the afternoon crying my eyes out over dog issues (more another time; I'm still raw), and was wiped when I went to work this evening.

What does it mean when I show up to work exhausted from crying and my protege offers me the couch in his office for a nap (after first giving me the seat he was sitting in)? He's such a nice guy.

maise said...

I'm sorry to hear about the dog issues. :(

Gillian said...

Argh, totally missed this. Happy belated birthday! That cake looks badass.

JR, sorry to hear about dog woes. Your protege sounds like a hero.

Anonymous said...

My how the corny have fallen. Pity.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Zee, my protege is a hero, a total fricking hero, and super dreamy and all that, too.

Anyway, the dog thing - after yearsandyearsandyearsandyears of waiting, my husband and I are finally ready for a dog. We found a breeder that we liked, and went and met the pregnant mother and the father of the puppies, put down a deposit and were waiting to hear back. The breeder also was upfront about the fact that there had been a terrible accident on her farm (where a kid she had hired to do some labor was killed and she was fined a ton of money, etc), and that it was a complete accident. I was okay with it, thinking she was a professional breeder, not a construction supervisor, and felt okay about getting a dog from her.

The pups were due two weeks ago, and the arrangement was that she would call us when they were born. She didn't. Husband called and left a couple of messages, and we finally heard back from her yesterday...I think he garbled a little bit of the message, but the long and the short of it is no puppy from this litter. We had fourth pick, and apparently two of the puppies in this litter died (what?!?!), and she offered a substitute from another litter or another upcoming litter. No.

I was heartbroken, absolutely crushed. With the other weirdness, I don't want another puppy from her. My parents were breeders when I was growing up, and I know that it's pretty unusual to have TWO puppies die in the same litter (sometimes things go wrong and they need to be euthanized, but that's a different story), and it's even fishier that we didn't hear about it right away...especially considering her other drama. So no dog from this lady, and it was a MAJOR disappointment.

I was heartbroken and spent the entire afternoon basically crying my eyes out because I'm so nuts about dogs. [I can't imagine what it's like for people who are trying to adopt or have miscarriages. I guess that's another reason that I could never do the kid thing.]

We are meeting with our backup breeder today, and I have a good feeling about it. Cross your fingers for me.

Iris said...

I'm really sorry to hear about that JR. What kind of dog is it you're trying to get? And, if it's not too sensitive question, why not a shelter or rescue dog?

Anonymous said...

We have had our hearts set on a yellow lab for close to ten years, and the timing has never been right. Finally, the timing is right.

We considered a shelter or rescue dog (my husband was more into the thought than I was), but my big reservation about that is the potential for baggage; my parents had a rescue dog that ended up being aggressive, and because they didn't know his background, they didn't know what his triggers were. I love the concept of a shelter dog, but I think that it takes a special person to take that challenge on, and I don't think it's the right match for us.

That said, we've spent the past year or so preparing our strategy for socialization, discipline all that stuff, and we are completely prepared for a Labrador Retriever - that's all we studied up on because that's all we wanted. So for this to fall through with the first breeder was really awful for me.

But great news - we met with the backup breeder today, and were able to meet the mother and father of the litter, and we picked out our baby girl (Phyllis McGovern Gaffney)and I couldn't be happier! I'll certainly have tons of pictures soon (she comes home 6/5), though I thought it would be kinda gross to take pictures today. Now I wish I did.

But for now I'm thrilled and relieved and have a bunch of planning and puppy-proofing to do. I've even already had my puppy shower. All I need is a puppy.

Isabel said...

wow a lot of thought goes into that, we havent even got a 'discipline' or socialisation strategy yet after having a baby a year ago. Glad everything worked out OK for you JR and its really sweet that Gaffney is in the name!
It's funny what you said about people having kids - my take on that is, notwithstanding hideous tragedy you don't expect to bury your children so you don't have the grief thing (hopefully) whereas I have always thought it must be horrible to welcome an animal into your home and love them as family only for them to die so soon, then you get another pet and go through the same process again - having pets almost equals masochism to me

Isabel said...

Sorry it is a bit insensitive of me to bring that subject up

maise said...

Yeah, the hard part of dog ownership is knowing that you will lose them too soon, but they give so much unconditional love and joy and ask for so little. I'm just happy that I can give my greys a good life after racing. It's probably better if they go before I do because you can't tell them about death. Then you wind up with dogs like that one Akita in japan waiting for his deceased master at a train station for years.....SOB...

Anonymous said...

No worries, Isabel - I've thought the same thing about dogs...in fact, yesterday in the throes of my grief, I thought maybe I shouldn't even get a dog if this part was going to be this difficult. [I then quickly moved past that thought into Plan B Mode.] I don't like any other animals at all, but as much as I don't like other animals or critters, I am an absolute fanatic for dogs; at this point, it just won't be possible for me to not get a dog. Even though they're kind of ephemeral...

And, you know, George Carlin famously said that life is just a series of dogs.

Disappointed said...

WOW. Holy editing. The minute someone makes a comment about the twitter business on ETS or NIN.com, in the appropriate thread I might add, it happens to deviate from the majority, it disppears. Is someone not allowed to say they just don't like what's being twittered? Maybe I don't like hearing about fisting twittered, is my post going to get deleted too? Oh wait, Trent Reznor says one thing and does another and makes fans do whatever he wants. Not this time Reznor.

Isabel said...

Someone has a copy and paste thing going here, I keep hearing comments I've heard before elsewhere

maise said...

Ugh, dreadful day at work where the project managers want to turn my prior mistakes into a whole new *policy* affecting the tech. writers. So I'm annoyed at myself for making the mistakes (in the rush to get everything done before vacation), and I'm annoyed that their inevitable reaction to the situation is more bureaucracy. And I've got so much work to do by the end of this week...can't wait to get home to the dogs, who are always deleriously happy to see me.

Anonymous said...

You know what you need, Maise?

A protege.

Mia said...

Maybe Trent can go all Britney Spears and do a quickie marriage in Las Vegas. Nothing would surprise me at this point. ciao.

maise said...

I do have proteges, but no one that I have a crush on, alas.

Anonymous said...

You can't have mine, Maise, he's spoken for.

I was married in Vegas, too, Isabel - at the Little Chapel of the West. Nothing wrong with it, I agree, but I do think the commonly thought of cliche of "gettin' hitched in Vegas" does seem fitting for where Trent is at...'specially if they've only known each other for a few weeks (is that right? I have to say I'm not following this super closely).

maise said...

Yeah, I also attended a perfectly delightful wedding in Vegas. And I've even had my own vows renewed by Elvis, so pbbbbbbt!

Isabel said...

Renewed by Elvis? Cool! yes, trent has known MQ for 2 weeks according to her twitter which I was sad enough to examine

Iris said...

The plan was to get hitched in Vegas but turned out it was on the wrong coast for us. But the Norfolk County Courthouse worked just fine for us. Big, expensive weddings can be nice but they're not necessary. Vegas is still a place I really want to visit at least once.

maise said...

Pfft, like it would take me more than two hours to agree to marry Trent Reznor. Let's be honest, here.

Iris, Vegas is a great place to visit for like 2-3 days at a time. Any longer, and you'll probably start to hate humanity. You'll have to join us there for New Year's sometime!

Sam Fox said...

Here we go again with the raging after people. It looks like Trent targeted several fans or people who used to listen to his music again last night. He has time to play on twitter rather than get ready for the tour and fix things with the ticketing fiasco. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH REZNOR????????

maise said...

Wow, Samantha Fox, how the hell are you doing? Naughty girls need love, too, huh?

Isabel said...

So Maise, looks like you're the Go-To site for disaffected NIN fans

maise said...

The funny thing is that I'm not terribly disaffected (beyond the requisite disaffectedness re: life in order to be a NIN fan). We've always been a bastion of Trent love over here, so I'm not sure why people are flocking to us now. Hell, I always assumed we had no more than five readers!

I really couldn't give a shit about Trent's relationship status. I have no beef with the current round of tours. There's precious little to complain about except for the extreme NIN-fatigue I'm experiencing just trying to monitor the trolls.

SpinalTap2 said...

The NINal Tap Tour. With the amps on 11. With Trent Reznor wearing red leather pants and channeling the lead singer from Loverboy. Smell the stale popcorn as Reznor meltsdown and his hustler girlfriend tells you to listen to her new single. Meanwhile, Trent does his HAPPY TALK between raging against musicians and fans. Come one, come all, it's the best show of them all.

maise said...

Ugh, I don't even know anymore. Is the word "hustler" deletion-worthy?

Meanwhile, I wish Trent were marrying Margaret Cho. Her Twitter is hysterical.

Anonymous said...

There's a fun game: who should Trent be marrying instead?

I want to say the Hipster Grifter, but that's so obvious.

How about Hayden Panetierre?

Anonymous said...

Or Bruce Vilanch?

maise said...

In my deepest, most secret dreams, I've always wanted to see Trent marry Shirley Manson. Then he could Tweet about whether "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" was being cancelled or not.

Iris said...

Can't be Hayden. She's shilling for that other non-iPhone phone. It would never last.

Anonymous said...

How about someone old school, like Molly Ringwald?

maise said...

I could totally go with a Cuddy-House-Trent love triangle.

Black Violet said...

Remember the art is resistance movement from a few years ago? www.artisresistance.com that NIN did?

You have a voice. Where Trent acted like he believed in freedom of expression with freedom and art? with all the censoring on messageboards and all, now it's like he's revealing that it was just a bunch of fakery intended to increase ticket sales, like everything was a lie.

It's really hard to like him anymore. I have moved on.

swbroken said...

Just watched the video. "Happily engaged but can still be a prick". Ugh. I had to laugh when he says he doesn’t want to be a parody of himself and do stupid things to stay relevant and cash in. A little too late there Trent.

maise said...

Okay, I gotta know. Are you like all a bunch of disgruntled NIN fans or like one really, really pissed person?

Anonymous said...

I think you need to rename Place Parallel, in honor of the safe haven for NIN complaints.

Ideas? Suggestions? I get to pick the winning entry.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile, I have a question for dog owners around here - K9 Advantix or Frontline for flea and tick prevention?

maise said...

Greyhounds have to have Frontline Plus, so I can't compare the two, but I have no complaints with F+...

Iris said...

We've always gone with Frontline and liked it pretty well. I'd just stay away from Hartz products, especially their flea and tick products. There have been lots of cases where pets have gotten really sick from them.

Paul Crane - exNIN said...

I think Trent's been acting like a BIG ol' tool on Twitter and posting that one girl's name, pretty freaky and malicious. I understand she is probably a nutter, but still, that's sad. This whole Mariqueen business is plain stupid. Regardless of who they are, such a fast union usually spells trouble. This is love Hollywood style, and I predict it will burn out as fast as it ignited.

Iris said...

If you're talking about the AngieZ chic he outed, well, she was kind of asking for it. She'd been warned directly from him to knock off the racist name calling crap but she just kept at it. In fact, it made her worse. I agree that TR's being a tool but I think he needs to quit indulging the haters with all this attention.

Anonymous said...

Great.. happy bday, whoever that is! Actually that camera is great. Uh, where'd Gabriel and Dierdre go? - Roth

maise said...

Wow, an old-school WTC fan! Welcome!

Gabriel and Dierdre have retired their fictional personas and have dedicated themselves to their awesome real lives. Although you might hear from Gabriel here now and again...

Isabel said...

Do you know what? I've just read AngieZ's blog and somebody else put up an article listing what she was saying and she really doesn't sound that bad at all - unless they left out some racist stuff?? the website below lists the angiez conversation and I can't see any racism
http://www.thrashhits.com/2009/05/trent-reznor-crushes-all-that-oppose-him-on-twitter-at-least/

But I personally saw that some girl had tweeted to MQ that she should just slit her throat - I think that's a lot worse than anything angiez said - why did Trent pick on AngieZ as being worse??
http://www.angiez.net/blog/?p=606

maise said...

"But I personally saw that some girl had tweeted to MQ that she should just slit her throat"

Oh, that's nice. See, people, that's why I try to keep things somewhat controlled around here. That shit is just fucked up, and it's not like any of those losers would dare say that to her face.

Man, it's like I forgot how godawful the NIN fan community is, til I saw them lashing out at this person they don't even know, whose only crime is the audacity of getting engaged to Trent, who they don't even know. Then of course, every time Trent lashes out at one of his fans (which only encourages them, btw), all the sycophants line up to bash that person as well, to try to impress Trent, who will only respond to you if you piss him off....ARGH! Damn you, Twitter!

Isabel said...

Yes - and the psycho tweeter in question then proceeded to tweet trent to ask for backstage passes - insane, but he didn't call HER out on something much more offensive just this angiez girl. Anyway I'm going to have to go twitter cold turkey as it messes with my head in so many ways.
DAngel - I thought you didn't really care for Slayer??

Anonymous said...

Twitter = inane.

maise said...

Yeah, Twitter is absolutely dreadful, but it's also kind of trainwreck addicting. And some people have genuinely interesting thoughts expressed in 140 letters. Like Margaret Cho or Saul Williams.

D:ANGEL said...

^^^@ Isabel

I don't really care about Slayer - I was just trying to add a little levity to this whole NIN/Twitter/Mariqueen drama that I neither a) know about or b) care about.

I am obsessing over Propagandhi right now. They only release an album every 5 years and the new one is great. Seeing them on the 31st!

I've also been listening to a lot of late 60s/early 70s folk/acid/satan rock like Coven, Black Widow and Comus. Do you know Comus, Isabel?? - they are FANTASTICALLY odd.

I have one more day left of school until the summer. Then I can breathe again... finally!

TheFall said...

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face, Trent Reznor!

Isabel said...

Comus? No I haven't but I'll look into them when I get a chance
