I am so happy that I threw caution to the wind and battled the crowds at Grant Park tonight. It was a wonderful atmosphere...hundreds of thousands of people, standing together peacefully, huddled around various jumbotrons scattered throughout the park, watching the election results come in. As I am only 4'10", eventually I could only see maybe the upper corners of the screen, but I loved standing with so many of my fellow Chicagoans--young, old, white, black, Asian, Latino, men, women...I think there was a Scottish guy behind me--and cheering and applauding. The roar when President-Elect Obama took the stage was deafening, and his speech brough tears to my eyes. Especially when he started talking about Ann Nixon Cooper.
I knew it was going to be crowded, I knew riding the El afterwards was going to be hellish (at least until the Damen stop), I knew I was not going to have a good view even of a Jumbotron, but I really had to be out there while history was being made.
Now, I know that some of our readers may not be happy with the results, but in return for my refraining from gloating, I kindly request that you not try to piss on my parade.
I think we can ALL agree, though, that those CNN hologram things were Weeeird.
This is an inappropriate place to leave this comment, but I wanted to check in with you guys from the middle of my NIN concert tour. So far, we have: - gotten on the rail at the Charlottesville show - saw much Fragile-era self-caressing by TR at the show in Charlottesville - gotten upgraded to a box right above the stage in Atlantic City just because the staff guy liked us - caught two water bottles from Robin last night - saw Peter Murphy come on and duet on "Reptile" last night with TR - saw much smiling by TR during and after "Reptile" - went to the VIP afterparty last night and talked with both Rob and Brett - got a metric ton of pictures, some of which are pretty great, even with my craptacular camera;
and we are pretty sure we'll be on the rail in Manchester too. Front and center. We have all day Saturday to wait in line if we really want to.
Oh yeah, and Obama won. BEST EVENT OF THE ENTIRE WEEK. Started off our vacation right!

I was watching for you in the crowd on TV, Maise. Glad you made it out there.
Wow.
Did this really happen? It still seems like a dream or something. America did the right thing. Thank GOD.
But I'm not hearing such great things about Prop 8. WTF, California?
WTF is right. There is still that fear I guess.
Prop 2 passed, something that made me VERY happy.
Crazy night. A total blur.
Maise, you are a rock star for braving the crowds. I'm so excited for you that you were able to have that experience!!!!!
Very happy about Dem pickups throughout the country. Quite pleased about the results of California Props 2 and 4.
Thoughts on Prop 8 here.
Wow, I didn't realize that sometimes there are up to five nuts in a Valencia peanut. Huh.
Gab - are you posing as anon? That's my job.

Awesome! Hey Azulaco, email me and let's talk about a guest post.
I think my good knitting needles are still in the box.
That's what happens when you use people and take their ideas. Forget about the rest - won't happen.
Huh? Who's stealing what ideas? Did Anon steal your pattern for a knitted scarf or something?
I'm still waiting for my conciliatory gift. Looks like it's not happening.
I still look forward to lunch.
